The Board of Education adopted the statement below on June 23, 2020 as part of a broader discussion happening within our nation and community:
Our Adirondack community can, at times, feel removed from the larger world, but that does not lessen our responsibility to confront racism. Many of our students and community members have participated in demonstrations recently, joining the nationwide protest movement for racial justice following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. As a school board, we believe it is important to acknowledge racial inequity in this country not only as a historical subject but as a present reality, one that deeply affects the lives of our students, their families, and our community. In the coming school year, the TOWUFSD will make a commitment as an educational institution to doing anti-racist work, to having critical conversations, and to support our school community as we all further our understanding of our country's complex relationship to race.
